Mom’s Red Velvet Cake

Posted December 24, 2010 by Scott K
Right from my mom's kitchen. Without a doubt the single best red velvet I have had anywhere with an amazing simple and delicious frosting on it.

Servings

Ingredients

  • 2 ounce Red Food Coloring (other colors ok too)
  • 3 tablespoons Nestle Milk Chocolate
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1 1/2 cups Sugar
  • 1 cup Buttermilk*
  • 2 1/2 cups Cake Flour* ! Sift 3x
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon Vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • Simple White Icing

Directions

Red Velvet Cake

In a double boiler, gently melt chocolate and then add food coloring to become the coloring paste. This will be added in a moment, so set aside once done.

Cream Crisco and Sugar together. Then add 2 eggs and the coloring paste.

After mixing, then add 1 cup Buttermilk.

Gently and in portions, add the well sifted Cake Flour. Do not over mix, which means limit the time in the mixer and speed. Add Vanilla.

Remove from mixer and then put in backing soda and vinegar, mix in by hand until completed.

Mix can be split into 2 layers. Bake in well greased pan, lightly floured.

Bake 350 degrees 3 for0 to 35 Minutes
